don’t wait. take the pictures. 🤍 don’t wait. take the pictures. 🤍
You don’t have to have the best gear to make art You don’t have to have the best gear to make art.

I shot these images 6 years ago on a “dinosaur” Canon 50D crop sensor body with a 35mm lens. For those of who aren’t photographers, it’s a known “fact” in the horse world that you don’t photograph a horse with anything less than a 85mm lens (and even then most people will argue that the 85mm will distort them.)

Will a 35mm wide angle distort a horse? Yes. At certain angles it will definitely make them look much more long faced and dopey. But, the 35mm is the most magical storytelling lens and for years, it’s literally all I had. I did every single shoot with a crop sensor body and a 35mm. (And yeah a 35mm on a crop is closer to a 50mm, but that’s not the point.)

The point is, USE WHAT YOU HAVE. Your gear doesn’t make you an artist. Your heart does. Will better gear make you a better photographer? No! I’ve seen plenty of photographers have top of the line gear and make terrible work. Sorry, but it’s true. And while there are many jobs that require specific gear to execute the assignment properly, when it comes to creating your own art, no one can tell you how to do it or how to make it.

When photographers say they shoot candids, what do When photographers say they shoot candids, what do they mean?

Candids are a fleeting moment. An expression of elation, sorrow, laughter, joyous tears, madness or pain.

I spent years learning how to visually story-tell working as a wedding photographer in Chicago.

Wedding photography is the ultimate documentary challenge. As a photographer, you have many different types of imagery and events in a single day that must be knit together in a cohesive and beautiful manner no matter the location, weather, time of year and lighting. It’s a non-stop marathon to test your skills and push your mind and body. (RIP knees 😭) Even when you have years of experience, it’s still very nerve wracking.

Moments are always happening all around you. I love nothing more than bringing those elements of emotion and humanity into horse sport photography to tell a better visual story.
